I’ve been practicing looking at people. For example, if I cross paths with someone at the gym, I’ll try to make eye contact. Usually, they’re either preoccupied, averting their gaze, or simply paying no heed to the people around them, but on occasion we exchange cursory glances, perhaps even a nod or smile. Regardless, I’m still getting routine practice with basic human interaction.
All my life, I’d shy away at any opportunity to be seen, but I no longer have the patience to care. I’m beating into my head the habit of making eye contact with those I’ve never met in the hopes that it will eventually become second nature.
All that to say, I might’ve made an acquaintance at the gym. We’ve only exchanged a few greetings and goodbyes, but it made my day today.
