Three monkeys were put into a cage. In the middle of the cage was a pole with bananas on the top. Each time a monkey climbed the pole to get at the bananas, cold water was pored over the monkey. So after a few tries by the monkeys they no loner attempted to reach the bananas. They gave up just ate the food they were given.

At this point in the experiment the cold water was removed. If a monkey tried now it could easily reach the bananas.

Then a fourth monkey was put into the cage. The fourth monkey started to climb the pole, but the other monkeys stopped him by making loud noises seemingly to yell at him. So the fourth monkey stopped trying the reach the bananas.

More monkeys were put into the cage and the same thing happened to them. They tried to get the bananas, but were stopped by the other monkeys. Then they removed the original three monkeys from the cage. At the end of the experiment there were ten monkeys left in the cage. The monkeys left had never experience the cold water that the first three had experienced. But none of these monkeys ever tried to get the bananas.

A child is born into a family. This child is very curious, sticks everything into the mouth. As the child grows it is taught what to do and what not to do by the parents. The child absorbs the teaching and believes it completely. The child becomes a lot like the parents. If the parents are outgoing and willing to learn, the child will be so also.

Children are not born sad or depressed, this is learned behavior. They learn it from parents, teachers, and experience. But every child must eventually become their own man or woman. Only then will they realize the truths of life. This is nearly always done by self-learning. It takes courage beyond what the monkeys had. I believe had the experiment lasted longer one of those monkeys would have tried and got the bananas. Just like I know that some of the people suffering from depression and low confidence will find their way out though self effort. The courage to say stop, I want something better. Love

This clearly shows social pressure and adherence to traditions.

I like experiments like this. Do you have a link to it?
