Hi, so I have a problem. I just got new WIFI installed yesterday and it says my IP address is blocked (im using my phone now). That's the message that comes up
What happened?
The owner of this website (suicideforum.com) has banned the autonomous system number (ASN) your IP address is in (12741) from accessing this website.
Im not sure if I did something or how to fix this?

Hey unno, sorry this has happened.

Check to see if your internet provider has any blocks. Some folks have had this happen because their provider blocks sites they consider unsafe or sketchy.

It could be something else, but its worth a look.

Hope this helps.

I’ve had a similar problem. My mobile phone provider blocked SF as it was deemed to be a sketchy site. I spoke with my provider and they lifted the block.

Hey yea I had that too theres a way you can turn it off cant remember how I did it tho. Look ot up online to see how to turn off your broadband well basically it's for certain adult sites that's its blocking. So look up how to access adults sites with blocked broadband. Also with the phones wifi supplier you can talk to someone from your provider online just need to show ID etc if not then you'll have to phone your provider. Just dont get a women while your asking to take off safety so you can go on adult sites 😂..

Hi unno, are you using a vpn on your PC or router? 🙂. I will go look up what an ASN is. Never heard of it although I know enough tcp/ip to solve my own problems without support, and I have cyber security built into my day job (which is to say I am not responsible for the security. I am responsible for not opening any holes after the security team has already closed them.

That is censorship. I pay for internet access, not moral constraints. The problem isn’t that I want to go to sketchy sites, but that they get to judge what is dangerous to me, as if they are qualified to do so. Glad you got it lifted, but the fact that you have to ask permission flies in the face of the ethics behind the www as an entity.*rant

I'm not sure what is happening there Unno. A VPN hides your true location.

It isn't an SF issue, as you CAN access via VPN and also on your phone, so I would continue to harass your wifi provider.

Heyo, I had this as well when I got a new provider. I had to log into the settings of the hub to turn off the child filter hah.

But im a bit confused how using a PVN would allow me to access it if im still connected to my wifi
The way a VPN (virtual private network) is built, it does mask your personal IP address, and makes you a little less exposed to being tracked online. The ISP, as in the WiFi provider, can see you going to the VPN server, but can’t see where you’re going from there.

The VPN software encrypts/decrypts information going back and forth. In this way the ISP would be unable to block access to sites based on a black list.

However, it is most likely a configuration setting on the router, as mentioned by @Brân

This is absolutely surely an issue with parental filters. It's happened to countless folks around here and the ISP will argue about it but turning off the filter should work okay.

If you know, I would love to hear why are they allowed to do that? Is this in EU specifically, or is that in the USA as well? Yes I can and will go do my Google-fu, but I am just curious if anyone else has a take on this. I wonder how the ISP decides which sites are blocked.

Google believes that the site may be dangerous is the real reason. Simply because of the 'suicide', it chooses to block the site from the search results without genuinely knowing the CONTENT of the site. Other sites, which have a more nefarious approach, have made Google (and other search engines) have to slice us out of the options served to people when they're looking for us. This has kind of leaked over into the ISP's, I think. "If google doesn't want people to go there then it must be a scary and dangerous place!" then they block it, making you forceably remove it.

Man, that sucks (I am assuming you are a guy based on your prior posts, but my apologies if I got that wrong). I guess they block adult sites and torrents too. Not that I would ever be so degenerate as to pirate 5 seasons of Adventure Time, or look at naughty pictures…. I wonder if unpopular opinions are also blocked. I’m guessing not the mainstream, but anarchists or antifa, maybe even BLM, but in that case they better be blocking neo nazi sites while they are at it.

I remain concerned that any company, large or small, would be gatekeeping the interwebs by default. Firstly, kids are going to get around any barriers you throw in their way. With respect to adults, having a block list without telling the subscriber is censorship, and there is no way that they are checking for false positives.

You're not the only one.
And yeah, kids will always find a way to get around whatever the internet tries to throw their way. If they want to see things, they'll find a way to view it.

I speak as someone who was a teenager at the dawn of the WWW. It wasn’t hard to get access to just about any content that was out there, so that didn’t provide enough challenge. Web filters on school computer labs were available quickly, but it was laughable to get around those. They are more sophisticated today, and so are the kids, lol.
