I need to get back into exercise. It's gone completely out the window the last couple of weeks. Usually, I try to go for a walk most days and aim to walk at least 8000 steps a day, but haven't been doing it in the run up to the holidays because I've been busy and the weather's been rubbish. I also need to do some toning exercises, as the flab on my belly is really getting to me.
I find that with me 'doing it for my son's benefit' Him doing it for 'my benefit' and us both doing it for the dogs benefit, we seem to manage to do it.

Also, we don't set any other target other than to walk. Sometimes if the sun's out we'll go somewhere different and walk further, but the mile around the village is our staple and I've found is always achievable. Although I'm not sure either of us would be so motivated if we weren't doing it primarily for each others benefit, I think it's easier to let yourself down than someone else?

Weirdly enough, marking it off on the calendar every day still feels like a gold star achievement whether we've walked a mile or five

Great idea for a thread :)

Well I've joined a gym (LA Fitness) because they have indoor swimming lanes so now have no excuses. As can't afford their trainer program doing it on my own so if anyone has suggestions for the myriad of machines for getting overall body in shape (eg lose weight and gain muscle/tone) will take any and all. Also may try to look into at least 1 session to get a sense of machines.

Thinking should do the following about an hour a day.
Yoga class on Sundays as don't have as much time on that day and hopeless on balance due to out of shape core etc etc
Every other day alternate between swimming and biking & treadmill (may add rowing machine and once in better shape eliptical or stair climber).

But do want to add the weight/resistence machines for about 30 minutes thinking maybe everyday...but all I managed yesterday was to walk around with my list from the internet to try to find the right machine--found a few at least.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions and wishing everyone positive energy for your exercise routines!

I went on a short walk in the woods (too short to call it a hike). Did better than the previous few days; the other days my thighs hurt b/c they hadn't been stressed in a while. i went and 1 1/2 hour and about the same in miles. I feel pretty good. Too bad I will lose this when i start back to work. That's when I will need the motivation.

Good luck @Kiwi2016 , let us know how you get on.

I really want to try yoga but I'm also worried about embarrassing myself in front of people. I might try following a dvd or something first. If I enjoy it I'll try to find a class to go to, but I don't think there are many in my area at times that suit me.

Will let you know...and yes the embarrassment part is a bit unnerving...both in terms of falling over but also how out of shape I am etc etc ah well time to jump in the deep end as they say and paddle like mad...lol...
