How old were you when you had your first job?

#21
Woah such a young age you were trusted to babysat?
Yes... way back in the good old days the young could stay home alone, play in the streets, stay out n were trusted to do what we wanted as long as we were home when the street lights started to come on. And those still in single digits could babysit those in diapers. *starting to reminisce* Banana boards, banana seats, drinking from hoses, and jumping on trampolines... without nets!

Btw i might sound like a spoiled brat i figured. Idk if i am one or not tbh, here in europe where i study medicine i have to earn enough credits by passing enough subjects to get the scholarship, which is like a job contract pretty much. Although my parents tell me not to pressure myself and they would do their best to pay for it, but i dont wanna pressure them either because of currency value difference.
So you live in a European country. I thought you lived in USA or Canada. Even I thought Australia and New Zealand too. I live in Canada which is a crapshoot. I’m from USA though. I’m in Indian descent.

And a pennant on a pole attached to the back of the seat!

Being a kid in the 70s/80s ruled ... No smartphones, no internet, the only screen was maybe (noncable) tv/Atari.

Outside ALL the time, even in the rain. Kickball, block parties, treehouses, backyard "camping", hunting for crawdads/frogs/snakes in the creek/woods, model rockets (my son and I still make/launch them), kites, those propeller-driven die-cut balsa planes you could buy at the drugstore for 50Β’..

Times sure have changed .

My first job was a paper round I think I was 13 or 14. When I left school I was working weekends/summer in a second hand book and comic shop. I was asked to defer my first year at uni to work in the shop full time but I declined (sensibly I think!). I've had lots of different jobs since, well technically I found jobs weren't really my thing so I've been self employed. I didn't have a proper job until I was 30, but then learned a lot of new skills which enabled me to set up on my own.

My first job wasn't really a "job." I volunteered during the summer of my 13th year at a long-term care facility (nursing home). I wanted to study nursing at uni eventually & then medicine if everything worked out like I hoped & dreamed. I didn't get paid with money but with experience & learning valuable lessons such active listening, patience, empathy & caring, the importance of human connection & companionship, & gaining a wider worldview because of people's experiences, life histories, etc. Being 13 years old was a long time ago for me. But I still remember my time at that nursing home.
