Chat Update - 3/13/2018 5AM GMT

I'm going to attempt to update chat tonight when the crowd is a bit smaller. Probably around 5AM GMT (1AM EDT). I don't expect the update to take long, but customization we have done (styling, emotes, text colors, etc.) will likely be in progress for a few days. You can report problems here.

Thanks so much for all you do here, it is very much appreciated.

The update to the newer version was done earlier and the basic styling has been reset to our familiar settings. Many things remain to do, and in the meantime you are likely to see:

• emotes not loading correctly when the first part of the trigger is another tag
• emotes not loading correctly for certain smilies
• color codes (e.g., "**#009900**") at the beginning of some messages
• no color selection option

I might be forgetting some things and there are other changes that might be made. Hopefully those above will be fixed in the next 24 hours.

This is a good time and place to post problems other than those listed above or requests for new chat emotes (include a link).

Cannot thank you enough for all you do to help with chat and making it so it is better and fixing when issues arise Tim- really appreciate the way you have managed to make a very cheap chat program into a full featured chat and come back and update and fix as needed (within realms of what is possible for the platform we have to use). Really wish I could express how much extra you have done to to keep it working to the many like me that use it without thinking and have no clue how much of it is bespoke just for SF. Thank you.

Expect some further chat updates over the next several hours (done by 3/14 8 AM GMT/4AM EDT?). I'll be adding back in things like the color picker and fixing emotes. Chat might go down for very short periods, but should be mostly operational during this. One thing you can try to speed up any changes is performing a hard-refresh in your browser (Google: hard refresh <your browser>).

I seem to be missing some of the messages in chat - I keep seeing replies to messages I have obviously missed. I've refreshed the page tons of times and completely closed the browser and opened it again a number of times too. Desktop computer running windows 7 using Firefox.

Tha you have a completely different issue as all others because when refresh they appear - if they do not then they are not there. Make sure you have all other cht windows closed. If have chat / particularly pm open on multiple browsers or on mobile and pc then the replies tend to go to only one place - wherever it decided was the active chat for that time and simply go there (ir try to go there though your device may not accept if it is not an active window on device) instead of the chat window you are using - but when you refresh you are getting a copy of everything that is in the chat to that point. If it is pulling your messages still there it is pulling all messages in the chat because it cannot selectively pull messages. The only other possibility is if you have either accidently (it is very easy to accidentally click the block or ignore if you look at a profile) (or intentionally at some point but forgot and not removed them) put people on ignore, In that case their messages do not show to you because you requested them to not show, however others responses to those messages would show.

@ArkoseSpiral - next time you see me in chat let's take a look at this. Ben's suggestions seem reasonable to me, but we can dive into it if I can talk directly with you about what is going on.

@crumbum - same thing on your separate issue.

A few other things I want to look into:

• Auto-scroll-down for new messages isn't setup for our larger emotes. I want to see if I can change the setting so that you will have to manually scroll less often.
• Sometimes emotes at the start of a PM aren't properly converted.
• Keyboards on some mobile screens cover messages. I can't update your keyboard, but I might be able to adjust the screen to minimize the distraction this causes.
• Text color selection for mobile and PM.
• Easier emote selection for mobile.

I won't say 'coming soon.' That might be a lie. But I'll be looking into them.

You mind as well ask me about Swahili grammar @DrownedFishOnFire as what platform I am using. When I said technologically challenged, I meant it.
