Hi Angie, thank you for opening up the cafe today! :)

Is it important to care for yourself?
Yes!

What does good self care look like for you?
Taking a shower, eating proper food, eating/drinking healthy, doing my skincare routine, keeping everything clean, and praying

What self care routines are difficult when you are struggling?

Even the tiniest things are so difficult....

Heyy Angie, thanks so much for posting a cafe for today, and cool theme too :) I’m pretty good thanks, hope you’re well too. I woulda been in here much sooner to reply but was a bit busy with some stuff today. Will do tags so hopefully some more people will reply.

My answers:

1. Yes, I think it’s very important to care for yourself.

2. Good self care is having a good balance of health on all levels - psychological, spiritual and of course physical. Having good hygiene and hopefully getting fresh air fairly often, having self-compassion and also compassion for others, and just striving to stay balanced with stuff.

3. The self-care things that are hardest for me when I’m struggling are eating right and exercising. Also sometimes being too hard on myself if I make mistakes, that’s always been a challenging one for me, continuing to work on it though :)

I’m in your state of Texas right now @Angie visiting for work. I’m in the Dallas area for the next couple of days. I believe that you are from Texas for some reason.

yes it’s important because it enables you to feel better about yourself. It helps to present yourself to other people as worthy of taking care of yourself. You value yourself and it shows.

the simple things of cleaning yourself up. Brushing teeth, and hair. Taking a shower and wearing clean clothes shows how much you care about yourself.
but I have a less outwardly struggle with self care.
setting boundaries is the self care issue that I struggle with.

Hello SF family! Happy Monday!

Been thinking about self care and what it means to me, so here are some questions for you

Is it important to care for yourself?
What does good self care look like for you?
What self care routines are difficult when you are struggling?
Yeah keeping up routines matters. It matters the most when it seems not worth it.

Looking and smelling your best affects your mindset. It also opens you to better experiences from the world.

The world often sucks. Hard. I know that better than most. Often, most of the time, how you present yourself makes zero difference.

But on the rare occasions when the universe isn’t paying attention and life is okay, it’s better to be ready for it.

Maybe that seems stupid. I’m sympathetic to arguments of that nature. But it doesn’t stop it from being true.

Thanks for opening the cafe @Angie and tagging me @JMG

1. Yes, this is actually something I do for a living, where I help people to look after themselves.
2. Self care is a combination of actions, which include mind, body and spirit. This might be the basics of washing and dressing, through to getting out and about meeting your social needs.
3. I tend not to eat well, I might start over eating, not exercise.

Thanks to @Angie for opening and @JMG for tagging me. *hug*hug

Is it important to care for yourself?
It's essential. I think a lot of us here can fall into the trap of only caring for others and refusing to look after ourselves. I know i certainly did. But i think what we tend to overlook is that it's both bad for our own sake, and ironically enough bad for the people we care about. If you refuse to give space and energy to yourself, you have less to give to others.

What does good self care look like for you?
Proper hygiene, living a lifestyle you can feel at peace with, giving the time and energy to good mental hygiene as well, and properly tending to any medical needs your body might present.

What self care routines are difficult when you are struggling?
Dieting and exercising. Lately i've generally been able to keep up with the former, but i still haven't built myself back up to the latter. I'm climbing out of the pit i sunk into a few years back, but it's taking time and sustained effort, as well as baskets of patience.

Good morning and thanks for opening and tagging me for today's Cafe Angie and JMG.

Self care lets me know Im not depressed. It helps me manage my anxiety and depression too.

Self care to me means treating yourself with TLC. It let's you and maybe even others around you know that you care about yourself. I know that it improves my mood.

-Showering and picking out ab outfit for the day.
-Fixing my hair and keeping my nails polished, wearing earrings.
-Eating a balanced diet, especially important since I'm vegetarian.
-Loving my cat and keeping my relationships positive.
-Stopping negative thoughts and not sleeping in bed for days.
-keeping my house supplied with essentials (toilet paper, paper towels,my snacks) and my car somewhat neat.
-Taking time to read, watch shows i like and just relax.

A day late but thanks for opening @Angie and for the tag @JMG

Is it important to care for yourself? Yes...as no one else will.

What does good self care look like for you? Feeling relaxed and content in my own skin.

What self care routines are difficult when you are struggling? At this point all of them... so guess boundaries that they are important...remembering the children's book The Giving Tree...feel like just an empty shell...

Today I find it hard to move around, my back is bad. I called the docs office to see what happened to my mri... why did the secretary say ''I'm sure he'll remember exactly what that was'' umm, no that was back in February.
Anyways it sure would be great to have a clean place and a clean car, my younger son hasn't helped in that department. Eat well, I treated myself to a burger last night and my stomach said ''what the heck is that, meat? what's meat?''
I'll hopefully get in the bath because yesterday I barely put a brush through it and went out, didn't care.
If I sound negative it's because I hate the disability and want to be able to clean and pick up stuff and walk like everyone else. I'm thankful for the opiod today.
Hoping I get myself a bed that's not on the floor someday and not out of a box. If anyone here considers getting a bed in a box, dont.. they sink in fast.

For me, self care is the most important factor in managing my symptoms. If I do it, I can function. If not, then I go into crisis 4 times out of 5.

My Routine is: sleep, exercise, nutrition, hydration, hygiene - especially oral, and meditation or self calming practices.

When I am struggling, the first part that gets infeasible is exercise, by far. Hydration falls over second, then nutrition, meditation, and hygiene last. When I don’t floss for 2 days consecutively, then it is a flashing red light that I am slipping into a psychiatric crisis, and I have decided that I will never be inpatient again.

If the last thing between me and an attempt is the crisis line - it’s already too late. I have a safety plan, however, and instead of a crisis line I will get help from a caring and trustworthy relative or friend who can make a decision clear-headedly.

There is still no chance I will go anywhere where I cannot leave when I choose, which means I must have the option to discharge AMA unconditionally, so no talking to a mandated reporter who could override my decision.

The reason is financial incentives. I have found out the hard way that staff have no reason to be interested in pt treatment needs, and in fact are incentivized to make patients worse in order to put them on a hold and get three more days of revenue.

Is it important to care for yourself?

Absolutely. I agree, nobody will care for you like you will for yourself and if you are not doing well there is much less you will be able to do for anybody else.

What does good self care look like for you?

For myself much is the hygiene and just being able to relax as best can. It is also a big plus for me to see to the humor which is one of the things I do that is somewhat normal. Laughter and being silly adds quite a bit to outlook.

What self care routines are difficult when you are struggling?

My struggles are more of just having and making the time. Hectic days can do that to you.
