Terrible nightmares

I don't know where else to put this. I've getting terrible dreams, where I either I am getting abused and totured or even worse, where I being gored in the most obscene ways. I don't like horror or gore, I don't know the imagery is vivid or why I'm so scared. But these are about the only things I dreamed about now, they're horrible. Does anyone else get similar nightmares, they terrify me, I always wake up panicked.

Sounds terrible, I've had a few like that but can't claim them to be common. Did you watch any horror, or read any particularly graphic books? If you aren't used to that, it can sometimes be the cause.

Hello- I also get similar nightmares. I'm currently working through a specific nightmare I've had every night for about 7 days of being stabbed multiple times. I don't have a ton of advice because unfortunately I also know how debilitating it is- but one thing that helps me is immediately after I wake up and I'm in that fight or flight mode is to turn on a light and do a grounding activity. If you don't know what that is, let me know and I can link you a list. Once I am back in my body, I can start working through the processes of telling myself that I'm safe, that it's just a dream, that the dream doesn't mean anything, etc. I have OCD so that's easier said than done but that's what's getting me through them and back to sleep right now.

I'm sorry this is happening.

Certain antidepressants might be prescribed if you have trouble with nightmares (maybe mirtazipine or trazadone, but I'm not sure). There's also a drug called prazosin, which is primarily for treating high blood pressure but which is also sometimes prescribed for nightmares. It's an off-label use though, and some doctors will not prescribe it.

You might want to try massaging the acupressure points listed here:
https://www.meandqi.com/tcm-education-center/symptoms-list/nightmares

I think the link for GB44 there doesn't work, but I can help look up that point for you if you'd like.

There's some general info about acupressure self-massage, as well as info about a longer acupressure self-massage here:

Making herbal tea from Rosemary can be calming and might also help with bad dreams.

Dream analysis isn't evidence-based but some therapists will do it because some clients find it helpful. Might be worth asking a therapist about your dreams. A skilled therapist would also explore any possible trauma background you might have that could be related. The subconscious presents things in all sorts of strange ways that don't seem related at first.
