I minored in Economics as an undergraduate. It matches the way my brain is wired so well that it’s stimulating to learn. It’s a way to apply some advanced math to understand human society. How cool is that? I’m fascinated by the intersection between the hard sciences with the social sciences. How is it that the same quantitative patterns we find in nature, and even the farthest reaches of the universe also show up in anthropology?
I learned in my second semester of macro that a society becomes increasingly unstable as wealth distribution becomes more lopsided. It makes me wonder about the sanity of people who want to take funding away from school lunches and pediatric cancer research so that they get more tax breaks. They are already paying lower effective tax rates than the poorest of the poor!
I don’t think this is a political issue. It’s a moral one. The wealthy are shooting themselves in the foot, because the more they steal from the poor, the more desperate people will be ready to rise up to seek justice. I am not talking about through the courts. The highest court is obviously corrupt, and the executive branch just ignores every ruling that seeks to check their power.
I’m talking about revolution. The upper class needs the other 99% of us struggling so that we are too worn out working a soul crushing job because there’s no other practical way to get health insurance. So when billionaires cripple the economy by hoarding an ever greater amount of the money supply, they increase the number of people without jobs. Suddenly more and more people have the time and energy to rise up. They will be desperate anyway with nothing to lose. I don’t see this as a far off scenario.
