Yep, he makes a lot of great points imo, and he's what I call a cynical romantic, like me. :p I am one of those who believes not getting married is more romantic, and so are prenups. And I believe all the stigma against divorce or not-being-married should just end. We're not in the Middle Ages anymore.

My fiancé will probably not fully agree, but he knows me well. lol

I decided a long time ago that marriage just isn't for me. But one thing that really struck true to me was when he said "Going into a marriage without a prenup is like jumping out of an airplane without a parachute." In the US when someone is arrested, the cop is required to read their Miranda rights. But when someone gets engaged, nobody tells that person what legal rights they have or don't have. It makes no sense.

The bonds of marriage are mostly for the benefit of the society, not the individual. To make someone financially responsible to support their children and also their spouse if the spouse becomes ill or disabled or simply doesn't work - even if they later divorce.

I've known several people who were victims of conniving or gold-digger spouses - both male and female. One guy ended up paying child and spousal support for the woman who cheated and left him. She had a new boyfriend but was careful not to live with him so that she could continue to be supported by her ex (she was not working), while she was enjoying vacations and a car paid for by the new boyfriend.

A friend of mine in her 40s married a guy who failed to divulge a medical condition that would eat up her savings and income (he was employed but had no savings or medical insurance - this was in the US).

I would definitely tell people - beware. And even if you just sleep with someone, make sure to be safe because carrying a condom is less inconvenient than paying 18 years of child support.

In many countries including Canada, living with someone for 2 years is legally equivalent to being married.
