Practical Advice Need some help with sleep.

Hello. I'm doing relatively well for myself right now mentally so I haven't visited here in a while. I don't talk to anyone and have no active social media accounts, so I didn't know where else to ask. This was the first place that came to mind and I figured someone here might be able to give some advice.

My sleeping pattern has fallen into a rut - the other week, I stayed up until 7AM and my sleep pattern became completely inverted for a little while. It's a little better now but I'm still finding myself unable to sleep until past 3AM. Even if I try to sleep earlier, no matter what, I'll only find myself lying awake until I eventually fall asleep - and consequently, wake up - at the same times I usually do. There are times when I wake up earlier than usual but these moments are inconsistent. I tend to wake up sometime in the afternoon, either early or late, regardless of when I sleep.

Normally I wouldn't mind. I don't really have a schedule other than what I set for myself, I like the night and find it calming so I would comfortably continue like this if I could. The problem right now is that I have some events coming up soon that I will likely need to wake up earlier for. I can't just hope I'll get lucky and wake up earlier, I need to be able to change my sleep pattern again - even if for a short while - so I can wake up in time.

As I've mentioned, any attempt to sleep earlier is often futile. Sleeping at a set time doesn't seem to guarantee I'll wake up at a set time as well. The only thing I hope for right now is some kind of trick or method that will put me to sleep, I've heard counting backwards can help or something like that but I am uncertain as to any exact methods. I don't really care if it's a permanent change or not, and honestly, I'd prefer it to be temporary as I greatly prefer being awake at night and there's not a whole lot of reason not to with my lifestyle. But I really need to be able to control my sleep pattern a little better.

Thank you in advance for anything you may be able to suggest to me.

Hey, I've struggled to get good sleep my whole life!

Here are some idea that have helped people, please take what you think will work and leave the rest.

No electronics for two hours before bedtime. This means you have to have a bedtime! But screens will keep you awake.

Do nothing in your bed except for sleep and umm sex (I embarassed myself there). Like don't sit in bed and pay bills!

No caffeine for 3 hours before bedtime, some say none after noon.

Make your bedroom dark and cool. Some folks really crank up the AC and use a fan. Cooler temps are conducive to good sleep.

Don't lay in bed waiting for sleep for more than an hour. After that get up and read or something quiet for a bit, avoid screens at that time too.

I hope some of this makes sense and will help. Let us know how you are doing!

Hello @Evael. I understand it is frustrating when our sleep schedule gets off track, and it is not easy to correct it. Lying awake in bed is no fun either!

To help me fall asleep, the most effective method I have found is heavy exercise earlier in the day. For instance if I play tennis 1.5-2 hours, then I find myself really sleepy even an hour before bedtime, and end up going to bed early sometimes.

As Angie mentioned, it's important to get the room dark -- I use blackout curtains.

here are the behaviours and things which helped for my sleep:

Dark cold bedroom

warm comforters, & a new, favorite pillow

Hydrated well all day with plain water

No junk food if at all possible - and no sugary food or drink after 5 p.m.

Exercise for at least 45 min. every day

Small amount magnesium and calcium with a glas of water at bbedtime

If awoken in the middle of the night, do not use a smart phone or laptop in bed.
