It takes many years for a baby human to become an adult. There is much learning to do. They are sent to school to learn the alphabet, then words, putting the words into thoughts, among many other things like math.
They are learning new thoughts. A word is a thought committed to memory where it can be “thought of” when needed. Our thoughts determine our actions and our actions determine our life. It is a well known saying: “thoughts create reality.” So thoughts are very important to our happiness and success.
Mark Twain said: “Some people say they can, and others say they can’t. Both are correct.” They are correct because they believe their own thoughts and feelings as if they were reality. They have convinced themselves that they can or can’t. Sometimes it is others that have them convinced they are worthy or worthless. Parents and teachers and friends may do so unknowingly.
I remember an Art teacher once told me the drawing I made was horrible. I never attempted to draw again. I was a sensitive child and easily hurt by negative criticism. Most people just don’t realize the effect of their words on others.
So children grow up with all different feelings about themselves, most of them totally unreal and unnecessary. I was one of those children. I felt I was dumb, and socially left-out. I was bullied and teased and felt unworthy. Yes, I thought about suicide, but was afraid of going to hell. I did run away from home once. My dad came and got me after a drugstore clerk called him. I did get about 75 miles from where I lived.
Life got better as I got older. I took vocational printing and was working as a typesetter. I came to own the place I worked at when the owner’s health deteriorated and he sold it to me and the bookkeeper for a small amount.
We had a few good years before Desktop Computers arrived in businesses and typesetting was no longer needed. As our business went south I became more panicked. My heart couldn’t stand the strain. One night I had a Near Death Experience. Found myself seeing a glimpse of an afterlife. It changed all previous thoughts of what happens after death.
I knew from that experience that I could no longer think as I had before. So how to change thoughts. How do I change my negative thinking into positive thinking. I tried meditation, reading positive books and other good literature. From them I got the idea of doing Affirmations. Affirmations are positive thoughts you say to yourself at least twice a day.
I made a list of affirmations for myself and started using them. When I went to work I would sit at my desk and write out the list in a notebook. At night I would read them carefully before going to bed. On the weekends I would just read them carefully in the mornings.
I was determined. It took about two months of doing these affirmations before I began to notice the difference. I kept right on doing them. At the end of a full year I was surprised at how well I felt about myself. My bookkeeping partner told me: “I have never seen anyone change as much as you have.”
Today, I still use them when needed, and I have added more sets of affirmations to them. I can’t guarantee that affirmations will work for everyone. But if you are curious what my affirmations were like you can find them here.
