As some people may have noticed - they get the same pop-up on SF now as on most sites - an advisement that we use cookies to enhance user experience and enable certain aspects of software to function blah blah etc.
Cookies are a little token that is placed on your computer or browser when you are using the internet. They CAN be used for many things, and often are used for things that we may or may not appreciate, such as directed advertising, or collecting browsing history.
The cookies we use serve a single purpose- it is so that when you log in you remain logged in and do not have to log in every time you change pages/ open a thread, etc. It just tells the site yes you have permission to view that thread, yes you have permission to read that message, and it is how your computer knows what threads you have already read/ which ones are new to you.
When you tick the "keep me logged in until I log out" it places a longer lasting cookie - if you do not it lasts just a few minutes, and you will be prompted to log in again after 15 minutes or so. WE DO NO ADVERTISING on SF period, and COLLECT NO DATA from the cookies we use. The purpose is purely so you can stay logged in and your account knows new threads from old, new private messages from old, etc. This is the same as it always has been.
We had to activate the cookie warning as a requirement to continue allowing FB sign in to make signing in easier for those that prefer that sign in method, and for changes to the way google approves sites for being listed in search results in EU countries. There has been no change whatsoever in what is being done or how- just an administrative change to provide the notice so we can stay in good graces with Google and FB.
