Chat Update and New Chat, new chat costs

We have had a plan in place to update the chat we currently use to a better version since the end of last year. We were trying to wait 6 months as it is a new build that was just released and we wanted to give it 6 months of de-bugging before installing here because we do so much customizing to out chat which makes some updates difficult. That all said- we have continued to have more and more issues with chat culminating in an issue today that required us to shut down the entire site temporarily for 20-30 minutes while we corrected the issue in chat.

Due to ongoing issues we will be looking to change chat in the next 7-14 days to a completely new and improved chat. This will resolve some ongoing issues however the new version will lack some of the nice customization that have been done in our own chat, at least initially. While the overall function will be better and more secure, the actual use will be less personalized for a while.

There is also a cost issue associated with this upgrade, The software license will be aprox $125, and guessing close to the same in costs for installation tech assistance to get it all up and running, so about $260 is the total cost of updating to the new chat. This happens to be during the first month in over a year that we have not achieved our monthly goal on basic hosting/operating costs.

We will do the needed updates and that includes ensuring a stable and secure chat platform for the many members that find our chat to be integral to their support systems. Myself and Freya, as well as a couple other members have always and always will cover any costs needed to keep the suite running and secure that are not covered by donations and will continue to do so, but these costs are sometimes substantial when borne by only a couple or small number of people and more easily covered by small donations from many.

If anybody would care to contribute towards the cost of chat or monthly operating expenses that can afford to do so without depriving themselves or their family of anything please consider this an excellent time to do so. Just using the donate button either here on the forum, or on the home page of site with the articles and you can donate using any credit/debit card or checking account. The donation will appear as "FCD Digital" - it WILL NOT say Suicide Forum on your bank or credit card statements to ensure you additional privacy.

Please feel free to mark your donation in the comments as for chat upgrades, site operating costs, or as needed....and please only donate if and the amount that you can easily afford without hardship of any type. Thank you for reading and thank you for making SF such a great support site for so many. The counter may reach or exceed 100% , however the actual costs for this month with the needed upgrades is over $500, not just the $235 of typical monthly costs and any additional money is always used to help the site through licence fees, hosting, software upgrades, or social media support costs, etc.

We have purchased the new chat program and hope to have it installed this week. Thank you to all that have donated to make this such an easy fix. It is amazing how easy and fast some problems are with the help of many. Thanks so much to the incredible members here that make this such a great site.

The fabulous Eugene (who rescued SF from a nasty hack over a year ago) is about to start uninstalling chat software and reinstalling new software. This may take some time and until the awesome Tim has worked his magic, the chat will look a little weird for a while

Eventually the new chat should look not a lot different than the current chat - but it will:
  • Have better mobile functionality
  • Less lag
  • No issues with missing messages
  • Able to have more than one SF tab open at a time without it messing it up
  • More secure / no vulnerabilities
  • Less problem with freezing or glitching
It might take a couple of days for chat to look normal. Please bear with us :)

Please report any issues you have with chat. As an extra favor and to reduce issues- try clearing cache and cookies and please do not use old shortcuts that you may have saved on your computer to get to chat if you are experiencing problems. If the issue goes away when this is done then it is not a software issue- it is just the way your computer is trying to use or access chat.

If you still have issues after the above step please report what the issue is in detail (it does little good from a "fix it" point of view when we just get told "not working" or "not working right" .... does chat show- when you click does it open- does it send message - does it receive message, etc) if possible send screen shots of the exact issue or error to assist us in debugging/ trouble shooting.

Thank you all !!!
